The department was established alongside the founding of the College of Medicine in 1428AH (2007)AD, Following the blessed visit of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud - May Allah have mercy on him - to the Northern Border Region.  Actual teaching in the department began in 1430AH, with the teaching of medical microbiology and parasitology courses for male and female students of the College of Medicine, in addition to Medical Laboratory Technology courses in the College of Applied Medical Sciences.
